Safer Waters at the Port of Belfast
27 Jun 2005
The Port of Belfast is Northern Ireland’s principle maritime gateway. It’s Ireland’s busiest ferry port with almost two million passengers and half a million freight units passing through each year.
Established in 1847 by an Act of Parliament, the Port of Belfast has one of only six Home Office approved independent police forces in the United Kingdom. Belfast Harbour Police (BHP) has full constabulary powers, and consists of trained uniformed police officers and a CID section that provide 24/7 cover, responding immediately to incidents and requests for assistance throughout the 2000 acre harbour estate, which consists of a third of the City of Belfast and also Belfast City Airport.
