Economics at the Forefront of IP UserGroup USA’s IP-in-Action LIVE Atlanta
Saving Money, Time and Space with New Security Technology

The IP UserGroup USA Technical Forums present a cost effective way for security integrators and end users to obtain the education needed to understand the benefits of IP security. On November 18, 2009, over 100 IP security industry representatives, systems integrators and end users gathered at IP UserGroup USA’s  IP-in-Action LIVE Atlanta, held at the AMA Conference Center, Atlanta, GA, to discuss the economics of IP in terms of return on investment: using the latest technology to be more efficient and save money.

In the Opening Keynote, “Security Master Planning,” Timothy D. Giles, CPP, PSP, President, Risk/Security Mgmt & Consulting and former Director of Security at IBM, focused his presentation on operating in today’s economy. Customers want you to “Show Me the Money,” his presentation title suggested.

Technology migration requires you to be an integral player in a company’s risk assessment process. “Assist clients with planning for moving into the next level of technology,” said Giles. “By linking security systems to risk reduction you have an alternate way of demonstrating the value of the expenditure to the business.”

According to Giles, most companies that do not currently have IP security technology have never put a plan before Executive Management for migrating to it. Attend meetings with Executive Management and the IT Department to help them understand the savings to the business they achieve, he stated.

“They need to develop budget funding in the out years for replacement of these systems and/or parts of the systems which can also address upgrading to newer technology such as IP,” Giles pointed out.

The Video Master Class, “Understanding the H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10/AVC Video Compression Standard,” byChris Adesanya, Senior Systems Engineer, Panasonic System Solutions Company, illustrated how there is little difference in the video quality between the standards yet H.264 compression significantly reduces storage and bandwidth requirements.

Tech Tips, "Fail Safe Recording Options for IP Edge Devices," by Daniel Cremins, Manager, Product Marketing, Edge Devices, March Networks, covered archive and storage alternatives and benefits.

Emerging Technology, “Why End-users Are Looking to the Cloud,” by Dave Williams, Director of Business Development, Brivo Systems, explored how software is a service by explaining the basic business case for cloud computing in 5Cs: Change, Compliance, Costs, Continuity and Coverage.

IP Solutions, “The New Math: More Cameras + More Resolution + More Retention = Less Infrastructure,” by Charles Foley, Chief Executive Officer, TimeSight Systems, offered a method of retaining video in order to cut down on storage based on the lifecycle of the video.

The Value of IP, “Showingthe ROI on IP: How Intelligent Surveillance Improves the Bottom Line,” by Marc Bergeron, Sr. Director, Enterprise Systems, 3VR Security, showed how using technology to “structure” security data and “connect” security professionals is critical to transforming security industry.

Integration Insights, "Expanding Options with IP: New Opportunities for IP-based Security Systems in Outdoor Applications " by TJ Roe, Surveillance & Security Industry Strategic Relationships Manager, GarrettCom, Inc., offered unique considerations in planning and design for campus applications, highlighting the components and benefits of using IP technology.
